Mulching and Hot Weather

August is such a hot month here in the Brazos area.  One of the best ways to conserve water for your flowers, shrubs and trees is to mulch  around them.  It is amazing how much cooler mulched soil is compared to unmulched soil.  Often is can be as much as 10 degrees cooler.

There are many materials used for mulching, such as bark, wood chips, pine needles, leaves and compost, just to name a few.  These materials need a depth of 3″ to 4″.  Not only will mulch help reduce water consumption it will also keep weeds at a minimum.
